Fat Tuesday.
allforhisgreaterglory: mystagogy: lovelyloretta: I don’t really understand the concept of overindulging in everything you’re not supposed to have during Lent. As my priest always says, whatever you’re doing for Lent should not be something that you plan on going back to once Easter is here. You should do something that will affect your life forever after. As an adult, you shouldn’t give up...

Remember brothers and sisters...
mystagogy: acatholicvibe: In our self-denial we are removing those things that distract us that we can come closer to God in placing our thoughts on God rather than the material goods we can so easily get wrapped up in. We can’t just stop eating chocolate for Lent and think that’s it - we are to draw our minds and our bodies to the Cross of Christ in humility. This is really beautiful, and so...

Back from the Jesuit Candidates' weekend
It was nice to get a bit of an inside look at the novitiate. Lots of interesting talks with the novices and the other candidates, lots of good information to think about. I will definitely need to continue looking at the Society of Jesus. Some highlights: Tour of LA, including the cathedral, Homeboy Industries (we just drove by, since it was closed), and Dolores Mission parish. Scullery duty....

The number 40 in the Bible
Because Lent is coming up, I thought I’d mention some of the places the number 40 comes up in the Bible, to see the significance of the 40 days of Lent. (This list is not comprehensive). Gen. 7:12,17 - God creates the Flood by having it rain for 40 days because of the world’s sin, though he saves righteous Noah Ex. 24:18, 34:28 - Moses spends 40 days on Mount Sinai, fasting and being...

Do the Saints pray for us?
simplyorthodox: Do the Saints, whom we call upon, pray for us? They certainly pray for us. If I, a sinful man, a cold-hearted, sometimes wicked and malevolently disposed man, praying for others who have instructed or have not instructed me to pray for them and do not doubt, do not weary of saying their names during prayer, although sometimes not heartily, then will not God’s Saints—those lamps...

Why the HHS “Compromise” Doesn't Work  →
badwolfcomplex: Excellent article. Bullet-point summary: The Church will still be footing the bill This makes it illegal to be a pro-life insurance company.  This still tramples the rights of businesses and individuals.  This still gives the HHS the right to favor certain religious institutions over others.  This is “divide and conquer”

The preaching of terror is not essential for repentance. Souls need not be like Dante, who went through hell before he reached Paradise. The lighting of sulfurous coals in the pulpit is not Our Lord’s path to repentance. Saint Paul told Timothy how to woo souls from an evil life, and meekness was the approach he urged. “A servant of the Lord has no business with quarrelling; he must...

badwolfcomplex: sweetandlovelygirl7: thelizardisfriendly: I don’t understand people who say “Oh, I’m Catholic but I don’t believe in x, y, and z.”  I can totally see not understanding what the Church is doing, but I’ve always thought that a big part of being Catholic was trusting in the authority of the Church.  If you don’t, then why are you even identifying yourself as Catholic? It’s a...

The Presentation of the Lord, one of the Great...
simplyorthodox: Today the Orthodox Church commemorates an important event in the earthly life of our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 2:22-40). Forty days after His birth the God-Infant was taken to the Jerusalem Temple, the center of the nation’s religious life. According to the Law of Moses (Lev. 12:2-8), a woman who gave birth to a male child was forbidden to enter the Temple of God for forty days....
